without thought

Out of nowhere, a hiker appeared at our campsite, breaking the tranquil silence of our remote mountain getaway. He greeted us with a big smile of delight, and we all shared a warm moment of connection.

Peterson Lake in the morning, Montana

The Story:

After backpacking 5 miles through a partial burn area to reach a breathtaking lake, Cris and I had spent two days immersed in solitude, surrounded by towering peaks, mossy shores, and the gentle morning mist that brought us peace and calm. The experience was a blend of serenity and nature’s raw power—like the thunderstorm that rocked us one evening, reminding us of nature's force and the need to respect it.

The hiker asked if the trail continued in our direction or if he should meander back to the alternative trail above, which headed to the next lake. I noticed he didn’t have any bear spray and he mentioned that he had left it behind and couldn’t find it before starting his hike. Without hesitation, Cris handed him our extra can of bear spray. It was a simple act of generosity, and it struck me how effortless it was—no second thoughts, just giving and caring with an open heart.

This moment led to a deep reflection. I realized I wanted to understand even more of this openness and generosity, without the limitations of old habitual thinking.

We all have ingrained patterns that can hold us back from truly embracing generosity and open-heartedness. Wisdom from the East teaches that generosity is our innate essence. Yet, old ideas or limiting beliefs often cloud our ability to give freely.

As we hiked out of that breathtaking landscape, I reflected on my desire to further release any lingering patterns of scarcity. The burned mountainside from previous summers’ heat, now adorned with flowers, reminded me of fullness, beauty, and connection. I chose to be in awe within all I was feeling and trust in the abundance that already exists around us and is us. We took our time along the trail, pausing to capture the beauty in these photos.

My Root meditation teacher often speaks of the gift economy—a way of being where money, care, and resources flow freely to where they’re needed, without hesitation. This grace mirrors the intelligence of nature and our own innate impulse to give. The photos included here capture this principle in action, highlighting the natural beauty, interconnectedness, and abundance we experienced.

In a world facing many challenges, returning to a simple, collective care reminds us of our pure nature. By letting limiting patterns flow along, we can foster a space of natural generosity and support for one another.

So, keep meditating—whether through yoga, walking in nature, or any form of moving meditation. Let these practices support and renew both body and mind.

Wishing you a wonderful August and a smooth transition into fall.
